I think she knows (edit)

I always found the ending of Justin’s original to be very fulfilling. May this remix do justice to those vibrations…

the wild campout

western australia

I was invited by Royal Jelly Productions to perform at the Wild Campout for New Year’s Eve. The set was a combination of classic Phortah tracks and unreleased treasures, combined with improvised contemporary drama/movement pieces.

I tried a “surrender experiment” from there, welcoming guidance in the moment to steer the journey. I was gratefully welcomed to Denmark, Margaret River and Fremantle to connect with humans and country. I created and performed a new dance piece at Ecosystem in Denmark and Bliss Festival in Donnybrook.

This music was made by Finn Rhodes (Ambler, Biomass) and myself in a village in Portugal in 2019.

These pieces are pretty far out, you can hear us coaxing one another into new sonic terrain, guided by our collaborative flow.

Thanks for the inspiration and great friendship Finn. .

sadaken ep

earthly measures - london

“Phortah shares again his unique, rich and emotive sound, this time on Earthly Measures. Sadaken exhibits further refinement of his familiar melancholic tonality blended with subtle, textural atmospheric elements. These five tracks are pulsing grooves that get heads bopping and hips writhing, in a very unique & intimate way.

Phortah’s vocal improvisations are being cultivated and appear across Sadaken. Phortah says of its effects "it creates that not-quite-human sound which connects with where I feel a lot of us are at: super digitised organisms, yearning for a way back to our earthly nature”.

That image captures Phortah’s sound and journey well: a repressed, visceral, animal nature reemerging to reclaim its place in an increasingly abstract, digital, binary, landscape.

olua lp

heimlich musik - vienna

Being on the Heimlich radar for some time, never losing track of Australia’s Phortah has resulted in the very first long play release by Heimlich Musik. Phortah’s debut album “Olua” drifts between the vibrant waves of ten tracks founded on a uniquely emotive sound and compositional style. The album courses a transformative evening, punctuated by a myriad of broken beats and straight four to the floor grooves. Organic performances of strings, vocals, flutes and percussion are featured in combination with analogue and digital synthesis and beat design. Phortah’s sound is at once nostalgic and gritty; incorporating also field recordings and noise. Olua journeys between flowing passages contrasted with abrupt and surprising moments.

The album was recorded and produced on Gumbaynggirr country in Bellingen and on Newry Island, New South Wales, Australia. The power of the surrounding rivers, forests and ocean have greatly influenced the music. Phortah acknowledges the traditional custodians of this land, the Gumbaynggirr people. Lila Swain recorded her vocals in Berlin. Given the spectrum of sound aesthetics, the album format appeared to be the only logical way to release this unique piece of art.
